IDIGO...

Not your mother's Indian music.

Music + Dosa

What happens when a bunch of musicians try finding the best dosa joints in NYC?  They eat a lot of dosas…

I understand the Indian connection, but not sure why Alan Palomo is in this gang. I thought he was of Mexican descent.. Though, I am happy he is there. Once upon a time, I was a Neon Indian obsessed fan.

Short film coming soon. http://dosahunt.tumblr.com/

My top favorite dosa joints in NY neighborhood:

Sarvana Bhavan: 81, Lexington Avenue http://www.saravanabhavan.com/

Indian Creperie: 190 Bleecker Street http://www.indiancreperie.com

Brooklyn girl dances with Bollywood boy.

Thanks Giri Coneti

He just made my day, rather, my week.

I usually blog music accolades but this just took my breath away because it's an amazing combination of music and dance. A true genius remix of Vishal-Shekhar and the ultimate dance on the streets of Bombay.

Both the dancers, Anne Marsen (hails in Brooklyn, I guess) and Yatharth Agnihotri (lives in the heart of Bollywood, Bombay) are so filled with passion.  I am so happy that they had a fun-filled, true Bombay experience with paanipuris, chai and the awesome improv-dance at the International School

This is exactly what would happen if my hipster friends from Williamsburg went to Bombay.

Read and watch all about the experience "Brooklyn to Bollywood" and "Anne's project girl walk // all day".

Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and The Dharohar Project.

NPR's Rachel Kowal says, “Laura Marling may have just turned 20, but her music is compelling enough to make dwelling on her youth a pointless exercise."

"If EVERYONE listened to Mumford and Sons there would be no fighting in this world." -- fan comment on youtube.

"(The Dharohar Project) started by invoking the Elephant God to come and help us play music. They start every music session like that, which is cool... we were completely blown away." -- Marcus Mumford from Mumford and Sons.

Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons toured together in India this past summer. They performed, made music videos and finally met up with a local folk ensemble in Jaipur, Rajasthan. What a collaboration!

'Mehani Rachi' - Waxing nostalgic for each of their homelands.

'Anmol Rishtey' - Talks about the effects of love in a relationship.

'To Darkness/Kripa' - The sarangi and morchang add a perfect melody to the vocals.

'Devil's spoke/Sneh ko Marg' - My fave-- Laura at her most expressive and the fusion of traditional Indian folk with the bass drum is truly astounding.

Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Zakir Hussain: Tiny Desk Concert : NPR

Maybe you've seen Zakir Hussain in my earlier post. But watching him perform in such intimate environs amidst a backdrop of books, cds and a bottle of whisky with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer is quite something else. All three Grammy winners are on tour together and here they perform two songs at NPR's Tiny Desk Concert, Bubbles and Bahar. I'm in awe.

If you like this, get the album: The Melody Of Rhythm from iTunes.

Shankar Mahadevan & Sonu Niigaam's rendition on Dhan Dhan Dharti

Finally, the first release from Prakash Jha's much anticipated blockbuster, Rajneeti

In surprise, two versions! Shankar Mahadevan's "Dhan Dhan Dharti" is powerful and technically strong. Sonu Niigaam takes the song in a whole other direction, lending his signature emotional touch. With lyrics penned by the legendary Gulzar and music composed by Wayne Sharpe, these collaborative efforts are a great sign of what's to come. Looking forward to Rajneeti's release.

MIA's new video v/s old.

MIA is in the news again. Her new video, "Born Free", is brutally violent and was banned on YouTube, in the first few hours it was released for its graphic depiction of military enforcement and racism. This is one her lighter pieces, if you will, like as the dancing queen in bright colors in her cover of Bollywood song, "Jimmy"...

Her 2007 release of "Jimmy", a cover from the 1982 Bollywood mega-hit, Disco Dancer
